Parental/Community Support - MathScape

MathScape materials were designed to facilitate parent and community involvement in a number of ways. The Teacher's Guide for each unit contains a reproducible letter that can be sent home to students' families explaining what students will be doing in the unit and how families can help their child with the unit. In addition, because many of the units culminate in a large project, there are plenty of opportunities to have family math nights in which students showcase their work on unit projects. Furthermore, many MathScape activities are interesting investigations that lend themselves to use at a family math night or a parent workshop.

The MathScape Teacher's Guide contains suggestions for ways to involve members of the community, as well. For example, the sixth grade unit, Designing Spaces, teaches students about geometry and measurement by having them build model houses. The American Institute of Architects has created an accompanying set of materials for teachers to use with this unit and will send member architects to MathScape classrooms to give students a real-world perspective on their math studies. Contact information for the American Institute of Architects is provided in the Teacher's Guide for this unit.
