In Mathematics in Context, a calculator is just of the one problem-solving tools available to students. The ultimate goal is for students to know when to use a calculator and when to use their computation and estimation skills. In general, students should have access to a calculator at all times. Activities in grades 5-7 involve the use of a scientific calculator. In grade 8, most units have activities using graphing calculators, but the unit can be taught without them. In addition some units suggest optional software to support the concepts and skills of the unit.
